Nogomi Folk Doll
Discovering the myths and legends of Japan
These clay dolls, moulded and painted by hand by the artisans of the Nogomi Ningyo workshop in Kashima, are individually crafted using local clay, porcelain and natural pigments.
Depicting traditional folk characters, they each feature a clay bell which is said to ward off evil spirits.

– The emblema bird of Saga Prefecture, shown here with a stolen golf ball in its beak
Tanuki
– A raccoon-like forest spirit, a symbol of luck and prosperity
Moon Rabbit
– A rabbit making mochi with a mortar and pestle lives on the moon, according to Japanese mythology
