The Japanese apron reinvented by international illustrators
Illustrated by Dutch artist Timo Kuilder, this limited edition maekake apron produced by Dejima depicts a Kirin, a mythological creature that symbolises wisdom and good omens.
Worn by Japanese shopkeepers, restaurateurs and brewers since the Edo period, maekake aprons (literally, “worn in front of oneself”) protect the body and tighten the hip bones. Each piece is made using traditional methods by Anything in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, and woven using looms produced by Toyota over 100 years ago.
