These clay dolls, moulded and painted by hand by the artisans of the Nogomi Ningyo workshop in Kashima, are each crafted using local clay, porcelain and natural pigments.
They feature the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac and a clay bell, which is said to ward off evil spirits.
Initially sold near the Yutoku Inari shrine, one of the largest of this kind in Japan, located not far from the workshop in Kashima, the dolls were also reproduced by Japan Post on the New Year stamps of 1963 (year of the rabbit) and 1991 (year of the goat).
