Candles made from wax harvested from sumac trees, which were imported from the Okinawa archipelago in the Edo period. These trees have been selected for use in candle making by Daiyo, which has been making authentic Japanese candles with various types of all-vegetable waxes since 1914. This type of candle burns efficiently, leaving a minimum of residue.
